Now we were desirous that he should tarry with us for this cause: that the Jews might not know concerning our flight into the wilderness, lest they should pursue us and destroy us.

Simple English

We wanted him to stay with us for this reason: so the Jews wouldn’t know we had run away to the desert. If they knew, they might chase us and kill us.

Paraphrase

We wanted him to stay with us so the Jews wouldn’t find out we had fled. Otherwise they might hunt us down.
