And it came to pass that I was constrained by the spirit that I should kill Laban; but I said in my heart, never at any time have I shed the blood of man, and I shrunk and would that I might not slay him.

Simple English

The Spirit told me I should kill Laban. But I said in my heart: I have never killed anyone before. I pulled back because I didn’t want to kill him.

Paraphrase

Then the Spirit pressed on me: I should kill Laban. But my heart recoiled. “I’ve never killed anyone,” I thought. I pulled back, not wanting to do it.
